Experience

I have been teaching children how to read for over a decade. Teaching a child how to read is the most rewarding experience there is for me. When my students experience that “aha!” moment I know I have been successful, and that is the best feeling in the world!

I also realize that there needs to be communication between the teacher and the home. Supporting the learner in the classroom means supporting the learner at home by educating family members about the process of reading. Communicating and keeping family members updated on the learner’s progress is part of my job. Setting goals and discussing how we meet those goals as a team means everyone learns together!

My overarching goals when teaching reading are to;

  • Increase reading comprehension which allows my students to gain a deeper understanding, meaning, and purpose to their reading.
  • Impart a lifelong love of reading to my students.
  • Support families at home by listening, communicating goals, creating and playing games that help the learner gain confidence in their reading, and by modeling how to implement strategies that support their reader.
  • Support my colleagues by helping them build their knowledge base in “how to” teach reading in the classroom that is done in an effective and efficient way that makes the learning process fun and enjoyable for both the teacher and the student.
